i would like to offer a couple of quick thoughts on why we are doing this and why this is so important. some of you may have read a book written identities. i thought he had a pretty good and useful introduction where he offers a global perspective on the origins of identity politics. and he says 20th-century politics has been organized on a left-right spectrum defined by economic issues. the left wanting more equality and the right wanting more freedom. that spectrum appears to be giving way in many respects to one identified by identity. less focused on broad economic equality and now on the wide variety of groups perceived as being marginalized. the right is redefining itself as patriots perceived to protect national identity and an identity that is often specifically identified with race, religion. while this remains important, fukuyama h says there are motives of political resentment. leaders have mobilized followers around the perception that the groups dignity has b

good afternoon. g welcome to our afternoon keynote here. i m a director of politics weekly and with me is the author of a new book, how free speech saved democracy. i ve known chris forprobably better than 30 years . currently he s executive ec director of the national publishing and censorship and before that he had a long stint overseeing american booksellers foundation of free expression and so chris, i thought we would begin their. with some of your earlier background and your interest in this whole free speech movement and how that will keep us free. i ve been doing this for over 40 years now and i got involved in the early 80s when i was looking for a job after i left graduate school and i found an ad in the new york times when they used to have classified ads and it was for a coordinator for a first amendment trade association. i had no idea what that was. but it sounded like me. that sounded like a great opportunity. i was very interested in the issue. at one poin
