The evil stepmother has been a classic literary trope in the fairy tales of old, including Cinderella, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. But while Cinderella had a difficult upbringing – abused by a cruel stepmother – a new study suggests she may have outlived her evil stepsisters. Researchers from East Carolina University, looked at data from more than 400,000 individuals born between 1847 and 1940 in the state of Utah. Regardless of the gender of their remarried parent, stepchildren were shown to have lower rates of mortality than non-stepchildren, the researchers found.
