Trial begins for Lubbock man accused in 2019 fatal shooting during drug deal
Prosecutors warned jurors on Tuesday they were about to hear troubling testimony from members of Lubbock s underworld who were expected to testify about a 2019 fatal shooting from a drug deal gone wrong. Things you don t want to believe are happening in your community, said Cassie Nesbitt, in her opening statements.
However, she told jurors that regardless of how much they disapproved of the lifestyles and criminal activity they would hear about, it didn t mean that anyone deserved to die.
She also told jurors in the 364th District Court that the state s witness will testify under what is known as derivative-use immunity, which prohibits prosecutors from using their testimony as evidence in other cases.

The Assistant District Attorney Cassie Nesbitt started by saying Copeland fired six shots at a car Cassie Oden was driving while she was trying to get away from him.
“You are not going to like some of the things some of the witnesses are involved with. They were involved in drug transactions but that doesn’t give this defendant the right to commit a murder,” she stated.
