An Edmonton police spokesperson said in an email that its cyber crimes unit became involved because of a working relationship it had already established with American law enforcement. Its U.S. counterparts reached out to the cyber crimes unit because they initially didn’t know which part of Canada was implicated in their investigation.
However, the file itself isn’t connected to Edmonton and there were no swatting incidents in Edmonton in connection with the file.
Princeton University deferred comment to the Mercer County prosecutor’s office. A public information officer for that office in New Jersey confirmed the teen is charged with one count of second-degree false public alarm for calling in a bomb threat to Princeton University.

SASKATOON A Saskatoon teen is accused of making a fake bomb threat that temporarily shut down Princeton University in September, according to Edmonton police. The school said it received a bomb threat to its art museum, library, study hall and chapel around 9 a.m. on on Sept. 19. Zachary Shevin, Zachary Shevin, a junior at the Ivy League university located in New Jersey, said at the time of the threat, the majority of students were remote learning, not on campus because of COVID-19 protocols. From home, Shevin got the alert to his phone. “Getting that notification was just sort of out of the blue because I hadn’t heard anything from people on campus,” Shevin told CTV News.

American police say that a 15-year-old boy in Saskatoon made a false bomb threat in September that closed the art museum, library, chapel and study hall at Princeton University in New Jersey.
U.S. investigators also allege the teen made a similar swatting call to an unspecified location in Connecticut.
Swatting is when someone dials 911 with a fake emergency call, such as a bomb threat or active shooter, disguising their identity and location by using computer software. The name derives from police responding to the calls with their special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams.
