A Herefordshire teenager is celebrating after striking gold in a prestigious Chemistry competition. Robin Skailes, who lives near Ross-on-Wye, was among only 635 students, from a total entry of 7,160 nationwide, to scoop a gold award in the UK Chemistry Olympiad. Robin, 17, is a student at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools and has been offered a place to read Computer Science at Gonville & Caius College, University of Cambridge. Designed to challenge and inspire, the UK Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for students in secondary education and organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Xiaoli Biggs, Anais Deere and Ben Robinson also shone and were among 1,663 across the UK to achieve a silver award. ....

Ffion Thurston-Kellar, 23, from Cardiff, developed diastasis recti when pregnant with her daughter last year. It occurs when the growing womb separates the muscles down the middle of the stomach. Cardiff and Vale health board said it was sorry to hear of Ms Thurston-Kellar s experience. For most, the stomach usually returns to normal by the time the baby is eight weeks old, but for Ms Thurston-Kellar, who had never heard of the condition, that was not the case. ....
They came courtesy of pupils at Slough s Westgate School in Cippenham Lane. Students had got together to fill the shoe boxes with gifts and treats. There were colouring books, toys and treats for children on the wards as well as toiletries, blankets, notebooks and other useful items for adults looking after them. Sabeena Akram, community lead at the school, said: The shoe boxes were wrapped like proper Christmas presents. We just wanted everyone who received one to feel a bit like they would if they were at home with the family. Carys Williams, Year 7 director of learning at the school said: As a school we are overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our students and are so proud that because of them, we can support those in our community who deserve it the most. ....
