Striking youth brutalise South Sudan aid workers


KHARTOUM,
(CAJ News) – SOME aid workers have been injured in northern South Sudan after rampaging youths protesting against the hiring of workers from outside the region.
An unspecified number of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) humanitarian personnel were brutalised after the youths, numbering around 20, attacked the IRC compound in Jimjams County in Ruweng administrative area.
One senior medical staff member has been seriously injured and airlifted to hospital in the capital, Juba.
Others suffered multiple injuries.
Thus far, the perpetrators had not been caught.
“We urge the local authorities to provide a guarantee of staff security so that we can continue to provide life-saving humanitarian services to host and displaced communities in South Sudan,” Sekyewa said. ....

Juba, South Sudan, April 28, 2021  The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is deeply distressed following an attack on its staff at the IRC compound in Jamjang County in Ruweng Administrative Area on 24th April where up to 20 youth entered the perimeter and physically attacked IRC staff, resulting in multiple injuries. One senior medical staff member was seriously injured and was airlifted to hospital in Juba. 
Caroline Sekyewa, IRC South Sudan Country Director, said:
“We are deeply disturbed by these attacks. Thus far, the perpetrators have not been caught and there has been no accountability for those that have carried out this attack. Rising food insecurity pushing people into famine conditions in South Sudan, warns IRC

Juba, South Sudan, January 1, 2021  The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is extremely concerned about the counties in South Sudan where an increasing risk of famine amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is pushing more than 7 million people into hunger.  Food insecurity is rising amidst massive displacement of civilians resulting from a perfect storm of crises; the effects of years of conflict, an economic crisis, recurrent flooding and COVID-19. According to the IRC’s 2021 Watchlist, the risk of famine will increase even more in 2021. With more than 60% of the South Sudanese population facing food insecurity, the IRC is calling for a scale-up in international financial support and improvements in access for food assistance for South Sudan to prevent famine. ....
