But other families who were struggling before, whether because someone was underemployed or a single earner struggling to support an entire family, are still struggling now. Evelyn Tahkeal-Eakin falls into the latter category. She and her husband have three girls, ages 6, 3 and 2. She works and her husband stays home to take care of the girls. “Right now I’m at a gas station and it’s just minimum wage,” she said. Her income is used to pay bills and there’s not a lot left over. She applied for a grocery store voucher from the Christmas Bureau and has been notified that she will be receiving a voucher to buy toys as well. “Every little bit counts,” she said. ....
