The 901: Memphis property tax increase; TEDxMemphis; Restaurant Iris

Good morning, Memphis, where there was big news in the local culinary community with the upcoming move of Restaurant Iris and the purchase of Leonards Pit Barbecue.
City Councilman Martavius Jones raised the potential Tuesday to increase the rate to $3 per $100 of assessed value from $2.71.  For a house valued at $200,000, that would represent an additional $580 annually.
The overall level of basic city services is lower than the expectation of many Memphians, Jones said in comments that mimicked Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland s former slogan. We can t be brilliant at the basics if the budget doesn t provide the basics.
Among other things, the new revenue would pay for a pay increase for city employees and MATA. ....

The 901: I-40 bridge inspector Monty Frazier, Memphis Grizzlies

Good morning Memphis, where the Grizzlies beat Mike Conley
and the Utah Jazz to open the first round of the NBA Playoffs and golf fans are in awe as Phil Mickelson became the oldest man to win a major golf championship.
But first, with the Hernando de Soto bridge still closed and additional evidence shows the crack might have existed as early as 2016, the question of accountability remains.
Frazier said it was unsafe to run the under-bridge unit which is why the crack was missed. The Commercial Appeal obtained the records of his firing through a public records request.
And in this column, also for subscribers, our Tonyaa Weathersbee looks at the potential disaster that might have happened had the crack resulted in a catastrophic failure as happened in 2007 when a bridge crossing the Mississippi River in Minneapolis failed, killing 13 and injuring 145. ....

Tom Lee honored 96 years after Mississippi River boat rescue

U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen said Tom Lee Day was an opportunity to reflect on where Memphis was and where it is now, in terms of race relations. When the initial monument to Lee was erected, it referred to him as “a worthy Negro” rather than simply a worthy man, Cohen said. Now, almost a century later, statues of Confederate generals in Memphis have been removed from public parks while the memorial to Lee is being enhanced.
“Nathan Bedford Forrest is gone, Jefferson Davis is gone and Tom Lee will be remembered as a hero,” he said. “And that’s the way it should be.”  ....
