Violence and other rights abuses committed against children in Indonesia rose sharply last year with more than 6,000 recorded cases, according to a government agency set up to protect child rights.
At least 6,519 cases of violence and exploitation occurred during 2020, a 49 percent increase on the 4,369 recorded cases in 2019, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission said.
In its annual report, the commission said abuses committed against children included physical and psychological violence, sexual abuse and human trafficking. ....

Interfaith leaders in Indonesia held a virtual prayer session on Jan. 20 calling for a speedy end to the Covid-19 pandemic and for support for victims of recent disasters.

Catholics in Indonesia are mourning the death of an 81-year-old Carmelite priest who was widely known as an expert on the Old Testament.
Father Berthold Anton Pareira died of a heart attack on Jan. 8 at the Catholic-run Panti Waluya Hospital in Malang, East Java province.
He was buried on Jan. 10 at the Sukun Christian Cemetery in the city following a requiem Mass in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral Church led by Carmelite Bishop Henricus Pidyarto Gunawan of Malang. ....
