A man died overnight. Welding work going on in the tunnel between Union Station and Judiciary Square station ignited some hydraulic fluid that was leaking from a piece of equipment. Three people injured. All three were transported to a hospital. We understand that the contractor died. The other two people were injured, metro employees, with serious but nonlifethreatening injuries. There were no trains in the station at the time. Metro is in the midst of track work on red line. That section of track was shut down in any case. The tristate operating committee and the ntsb have been notified about this. Of course, ntsb is in the midst of furlough. We dont know how that will affect the ensuing investigation here. We like to talk about the inconvenience thats caused by this track work.
