Today In Johnson City History: Feb. 19

Feb. 19, 1898: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported on a fire at Buffalo Mountain. “The Buffalo mountains (sic) near this place have been on fire for two days and the citizens along the foot of the range have been exposed to damage by the fire raining down on them and consuming fencing and whatever else may be on the outskirts of their farms.” Feb. 19, 1914: Readers of the Nashville Banner read of infrastructure improvements taking place in Johnson City. With a dateline from Johnson City, readers learned, “The Trinidad Paving Company of Cleveland, O., is busy installing the plant here, preparatory to beginning work on a $50,000 contract of paving in Johnson City. The work is being done entirely at the expense of the property owners and includes a large number of the streets in the southwest (sic) addition of the city.”

A story through the park

Local educators are finding innovative ways to take their students on field trips during a pandemic.  World of Wonder Ellen Street Campus created a StoryWalk® for the students, which consists of laminated pages from a children’s book installed along an outdoor path.  On Wednesday, Feb. 3, all of the Young 5 students at the school took a walk through Rackham Park behind the Fenton Community and Cultural Center where 35 posters are set up. On these posters are pages from the photographic children’s book, “The First Snow in the Woods” by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick, Michigan award-winning authors, photographers and filmmakers.
