Residents in Rhode Island woke up to widespread flooding on Wednesday morning, and a flood warning was issued in parts of the state until early Friday morning, according the National Weather Service.
“Do not go sightseeing and stay away from river banks, which can suddenly give way due to erosion and fast moving water,” the National Weather Service said.
The Hotel for Homeless Dogs, a New England Humane Society shelter, is on Martin Street near the flooded Blackstone River, which crested at five feet above flood stage after Monday’s powerful storm.
The statue’s marble dome had split beneath its feet and needed emergency repairs. It was taken down from the Rhode Island State House Tuesday for only the second time since it was placed stop the capitol dome in December 1899.
