Mercado Del Pueblo in Humboldt Park helps small business owners of color expand their trade


CHICAGO (WLS) A new hub for local vendors called Mercado Del Pueblo in Humboldt Park is helping small business owners of color.
Mercado is a place for start-ups and small business owners so start their business is a free rent space, and free utility space so they can start their businesses without paying any rent, said Carlos Bosques of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center.
Mercado Del Pueblo is located at Division and Rockwell, in the heart of Humboldt Park s Puerto Rican community. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center turned an old laundromat into a vendor hub. Not only are utilities free, but business owners are guided on how to grow their businesses into storefronts. ....

Latino business owners staying afloat during COVID-19 pandemic despite hurdles

After spending a year perfecting the art of making piñatas to help her Rogers Park shop stand out, Reyna Gonzalez decided to open her business in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
Her store, Dulceria La Fiesta Inc., opened in July, and she’s remained in business, though sales haven’t taken off like she expected. She has survived without help from loans or grants, and she recently started delivering groceries through third-party mobile apps to bring in extra income.
“It’s going to get better; it’s just a matter of time,” said Gonzalez, who quit her corporate job to open the shop that specializes in Mexican candy and party items. “The business is going to explode, I just have to be patient.” ....
