Plans for Carlisle Lidl store go forward despite flood fears

PROPOSALS to build a second Lidl store in Carlisle have taken a step forward - despite continued flooding fears.
A reserved matters application for the site on Warwick Road, has detailed the “layout, scale, appearance, access and landscaping” after the outline application (19/0840) was approved by the city council’s Development Control Committee in January.
Concerns had previously been raised over the flood risk at the site.
John Kelsall, chair of the Carlisle Flood Action Group, said: “We submitted a response to the original application which was not very favourable; we did not think it was in the right place. ....

A CAMPAIGN group has reiterated its flood concerns as a £25m project takes another step forward.
Demolition is set to start on part of the existing Sands Centre building in Carlisle to make way for improved facilities.
The new Sands Centre building will be set across two storeys and will add 40,000sq ft to the existing build, with the redevelopment offering facilities including a 25m main pool and a 20m learner pool complete with a moveable floor.
There will also be improvements to the events hall, a four-court sports hall with a spectator gallery, a 120-station fitness suite, and a spinning studio. ....

Flood expert Paul - a 'beacon of light'


A FLOOD recovery expert known for his compassion and competence as he supported flood-stricken communities in Carlisle has died.
Paul Hendy came to prominence in 2005 when, living in the city, he played a key part in helping victims of the floods
He used his hard-won expertise - and his ability to empathise with victims - to set up the Scottish Flood Forum.
As news of his death last week was announced yesterday, the number of tributes grew steadily. Mr Hendy was well known throughout the region for his work.
After the 2005 floods in Carlisle, he worked to set up a community advice and support centre for the 3,500 flood victims in the city - part of what became a three year programme of community support. In 2009, he set up the Scottish Flood Forum, but for a time also sat on England’s National Flood Forum. ....
