The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City canceled its Oklahoma March for Life due to concerns about the safety of people attending the event that had been planned at the state Capitol. The event had been set for Friday to celebrate the dignity of human life and to mark the Jan. 22 anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. "We initially planned the Oklahoma March for Life as a way for Oklahomans of various faiths to participate locally," Diane Clay, the archdiocese's communications director, said. In a news release, she said the march's cancellation was made "for the safety and security of all participating families and speakers." Chris Brewster and Barry Schmelzenbach have several things in common. Both men pursued careers in education, and they are currently leaders of Oklahoma City metro-area charter schools. Brewster is superintendent at Santa Fe South Schools in south Oklahoma City while Schmelzenbach is superintendent of Harding Fine Arts Academy in northwest Oklahoma City. And their career paths aren't where the similarities end. Each man comes from a family of Christian missionaries and spent a stretch of his childhood overseas. Most Oklahoma City metro area activities and events related to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday will be virtual this year. The OKC Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition will once again host a series of activities designed to honor King's legacy and all of the events will be virtual. The 2021 theme for the holiday activities is "Remember, Celebrate, and Act." Virtual activities will begin at 9 a.m. Monday on the coalition's Facebook page and website. Virtual events include a job fair, opening program at the Freedom Center, silent march, bell ringing ceremony, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Program, and the Martin Luther King Holiday Parade. ....
