The Founding and Managing Partner of the Songhai Group, Dr Ohene Aku Kwapong, has likened Ghana’s status in the gold mining industry to a ‘rent collector’ who would soon be out of business if it does not take steps to monetise its gold.
He indicated that gold is a non-renewable resource, which can get exhausted at any point in time, hence the need to invest the proceeds we derive from it to create more wealth for the country.
Dr Kwapong was speaking at the Public Forum on Monetisation of Mineral Royalties organised in Accra yesterday on Zoom.
Experts at Monday’s public forum on the monetization of minerals royalties have concluded that Ghana should boldly monetize its minerals incomes if it intends to make the most benefits from the sector.
Speakers at the Forum including Hene Aku Kwapong (Founder of the Songhai Group) Kwabena Ata Nuamah Mensah(Resource Governance Professional) and Carl Odame- Gyenti ( Banking and Finance Professional) argued that countries like South Africa and Saudi Arabia which have seen quick investments in infrastructure have done so because of among other things the monetization of their resource incomes.
The forum organized by the Minerals Incomes Investment fund provided a platform for the banking experts, Minerals governance experts, academics and students to explore the concept and best practices of monetizing minerals royalties.

The Ghana National Service Secretariat recently released the posting for the 2020/2021 placement and over Eighty-Six Thousand (86,000) graduates were posted to various institutions to undertake their mandatory national service. This number, I believe, has seen a significant growth year on year thereby increasing the number of unemployed graduates across the country. This training programme usually lasts for Nine (9) months. Undoubtedly, about 95% of these graduates will always wish to have been maintained in their respective places of work.
