Chipola awarded $1.7 million for welding and construction Posted on Chipola College held a press conference April 28 to announce the award of a $1.7 million grant to support the college’s welding and building construction programs. The grant funds will be used to expand the programs to support Hurricane Michael recovery efforts pertaining to residential and commercial construction. Funds for the grant are part of the Rebuild Florida Workforce Recovery Training Program: Hurricane Michael project, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Chipola President Dr. Sarah Clemmons, says, “We are proud to be a part of Rebuild Florida’s Workforce Recovery Training efforts. Our new Building Construction program is helping to train workers to rebuild homes and businesses devastated by the hurricane. Our first class also has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for local families ....
Marianna, FL – The preliminary employment numbers released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) show an unemployment rate of 4.8% in March 2021 for the 5-county region served by CareerSource Chipola (CSC). This decrease of 0.1% since February is indicative of the area’s ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The local unemployment rate for the area as a whole is down 0.7% from March 2020, as both the labor force and number of employed individuals continue to rebound. When compared to this time last year, the CSC region shows an increase of 422 individuals that have entered employment, and 295 fewer unemployed. “I’m really happy to see our five counties seeing an overall increase in the labor force and a decrease in our unemployment rate compared to both last month and last year,” says CSC Executive Director Richard Williams. “I’m hopeful this trend will continue, and we will see even more people employed in our region.” ....
Mayor honored at Pinnacle Awards From Staff Reports Chipley Mayor Tracy Andrews was among those recently honored at 850 Magazine’s annual Pinnacle Awards. The awards are held each year to honor women in the Florida Panhandle who are a moving force in private business and nonprofit organizations. Andrews’ nomination stated, “We know business and community members are led to a life of service above self.
