Image courtesy of the National Gallery in London April 29 (UPI) A painting of a bacchanal long believed to be a copy of one by artist Nicolas Poussin has been revealed to be an original by the French painter after a recent evaluation and conservation efforts, London s National Gallery announced Thursday. The museum is including the Baroque-style painting, The Triumph of Silenus, in its upcoming exhibit, Poussin and the Dance. It will be the first exhibition dedicated entirely to the 17th century painter, who is known for his religious and mythological subject matter inspired by classical antiquity. ....

But The Triumph of Silenus â a bacchanalian revel â has long been relegated to the storerooms, having been repeatedly rejected by some of the 20th-centuryâs foremost experts as a mere copy. Now doubts about the picture have been dispelled and it will hang in the main galleries with a new label bearing Poussinâs name. It will also receive pride of place in a forthcoming Poussin exhibition organised by the National Gallery in London and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. ....
