Brenda Sue Fulton, the chief administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, said the agency has overhauled its technical infrastructure to help move the vast majority of transactions online. Not that things are rosy, now – far from it. Not when six to 12 agencies are closed due to staff quarantines on any given day, Fulton told the state Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee on Thursday. Hearing that we are doing 20 percent more transactions than before COVID is no consolation if it s your appointment that was canceled. ....
MVC agency reopens and closes on same day as another employee tests positive for COVID-19 Updated Dec 17, 2020; Two more state Motor Vehicle agencies closed Wednesday after employees at the Newark Regional/Licensing Center and Wayne Licensing Center tested positive for COVID-19. The Newark agency reopened and closed on the same day, after an employee there on Wednesday tested positive for the coronavirus. It will be closed until Dec. 31. The Wayne agency will reopen on Dec. 24 after an employee who tested positive was last there on Dec. 9. They join 12 other MVC agencies that are closed until next week, making 14 of the state’s 39 agencies closed due to the coronavirus. ....
Paterson MVC agency closed till after Christmas Updated Dec 15, 2020; Drivers who usually use the Paterson MVC agency and regional service center will have to wait until the day after Christmas to conduct their business there. The MVC extended the length of time the facility is closed until Dec. 26 after a second employee tested positive for the coronavirus. That employee was last in the agency on Dec. 10, said William Connolly, an MVC spokesman. The agency was originally scheduled to reopen on Dec. 19. Paterson joins 14 other agencies across the state that have been temporarily closed due to the coronavirus. The closure of close to 50% of the state’s 39 agencies mirrors the spike in COVID-19 cases in the state and nation. ....

Branch offices were designated as either as licensing centers or vehicle centers upon reopening in July, after months of closure due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Eleven vehicle offices went to appointment only on Nov. 2 in a effort to eliminate long lines that saw customers camping out all night in order to get tickets that would get them service. “We’ve made tremendous progress in clearing the backlog of registrations for newly purchased used vehicles, which enables us to move fully to an appointment system in Vehicle Centers, reducing our capacity but increasing customer convenience,” MVC Commissioner Sue Fulton said in a statement. ....
