tomorrow. desperation in syria as reports of more government atrocities mount. syrians swarm the newly arrived u.n. monitors. and a new warning from the u.s. to assad s regime. plus, a perfect game for number 41. we ll bring you the final pitch that led to last night s victory. and later, the new york times s nick kristoff joins us to talk about his column. good morning, everyone. i m randi kaye. it s 8:00 on the east coast, 5:00 a.m. on the west. a lot to tell you about this morning so let s get you straight to the news. we start with a look ahead. tomorrow former presidential candidate john edwards heads to federal court. prosecutors say edwards used nearly $1 million in campaign contributions to deceive the public. they say he was hiding an affair and a child. the mistress, rielle hunter, is expected to be the star witness at the trial. she has immunity. edwards and his attorneys say he did nothing wrong. we ll have much more on the case later this hour. and to
measures. unions in michigan say foreign workers take jobs at companies that have hundreds of millions of stimulus tax dollars. cbs news reports the plan for largely owned by koreans and use korean equipment and supplies and employ korean workers. unions are upset showing the pictures inside showing korean nationals doing hands-on work that should be done by americans. there should be american jobs created with the american taxpayer dollars. the companies say the korean workers are temporary and legal and have specific skill set. finally, talk about a flimsy idea. officials in new zealand want to build a paper replacement for the iconic stone christ church cathedral destroyed in last year s earthquake there. the 82-foot high cathedral will be made from cardboard tubes, though traditional concrete and steel will be used for the structural support.
seems to be prevailing to the protester side. we expect the judge to hear an appeal from the city around 3:00 this afternoon. it has been delayed for a couple of hours. the city is insisting letting them back in the park with their catching paraphernalia would be unand unsanitary. there have been complaints about them being here. the city even said they found evidence of stockpiles of weapons here, cardboard tubes with metal objects and hypodermic needles that are a threat to the authorities and the public safety here. at this moment it s a standoff. you can see behind me the situation is sort of calm now. again everyone is waiting for the ruling by this judge in an hour or so to see what will be the outcome. the police are surrounding the protesters and people who were camping out and hanging out and waiting to see what goes on. a lot more tension is these 200 people have been arrested.
tonight, new information, some surprising of members of the militia group planning to wage war against the government and murder a police officer. eight of the suspects are shown here and their group, they call themselves the hutaree, its members view law enforcement as the enemy and believe armed conflict this is only way to destroy them. this is the leader of the hutaree, david stone. according to court documents, mr. stone voiced bad intentions and had a large enough collection of ammunition to do damage. but this makes them not to be exactly brain surgeon, stone and his followers wanted to create a country carved from four michigan counties and defend it as the one world order. they had gotten information about making bombs off the internet only they made theirs with cardboard tubes.
