Captured carbon dioxide could one day fuel an $800 billion industry It sounds like science fiction, but for a select few, capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from energy production emissions to create viable and economical carbon products is a hard-won reality that could breathe new life into the Powder River Basin and other coal communities. In the five years following the 2015 commencement of the International Carbon X Prize competition, and its conclusion in 2020, where ten teams from five countries strove to identify new economical uses for captured carbon in the hopes of claiming one of two $7.5 million grand prizes, researchers and industry leaders have discovered how to utilize carbon in ways previously unimaginable. ....
April 19, 2021 The nascent low-carbon concrete industry got a $15 million boost on April 19, when the nonprofit Carbon X-Prize named two startups as winners of a five-year innovation contest to design profitable uses for captured carbon dioxide. The prize, sponsored by a group of power and oil companies, shows how the companies want to keep operating as pressure grows from governments, investors, and the public to cut emissions. The global economy is still decades away from shuttering all power plants and industrial facilities that run on fossil fuels. In the meantime, carbon capture systems will be essential to drive down emissions from those sources and offset their historic greenhouse footprint. There are about 65 carbon capture facilities under development globally mostly attached to gas-fired power plants, gas processing facilities, and factories for cement and other industrial products but the technology has been plagued by the fundamental problem of what to do with ....
March 9, 2021 The College of Engineering’s Kessler Fellows program welcomed 20 new student entrepreneurs to its latest cohort, where they will explore entrepreneurship through academic coursework, mentorship with entrepreneurs in residence and a summer internship with a successful startup of their choice. This year, the program expanded to include Cornell juniors from all disciplines interested in entrepreneurship – it was previously limited to STEM students – bringing a myriad of academic perspectives to the 2021 Kessler Fellows cohort. “I want to challenge myself to think outside of the box – not only of my career, but also of the value that I could bring to society,” said Anna Hu ’22, a College Scholar in the College of Arts and Sciences, and an alumni of student startup accelerator, eLab. “It’s rare to see a group of people so genuinely passionate about some ideas. I love being close to this kind of energy.” ....
