SHYFT Power Solutions, which builds IoT and software to optimize distributed energy resource performance and operational efficiency in emerging markets, has announced an additional $3.1M in funding to bring its total seed round to $3.8M. The funding round was led by the SoftBank Vision Fund’s Emerge Program and Total Carbon Neutrality Ventures with participation from other investors including Lofty Inc, Samurai Ventures, and Urban US Ventures. SHYFT was founded by Stanford’s engineers to address the challenges in delivering and scaling clean, reliable, and affordable energy solutions in emerging markets that struggle with unreliable grids or energy access. SHYFT’s initial focus is in Nigeria, a country set to be the 3rd most populous after China and India, but were an unreliable grid has led to widespread dependence on generators, accounting for nearly 8x the capacity of the grid. ....

The investment complements a combined €4M in non-dilutive funding secured from UK and EU grant-funded projects scheduled from Q4 2020 to Q1 2023. Novo Holdings and DSM Venturing led the round, with participation from Total Carbon Neutrality Ventures and Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital. Johan Hueffer, Senior Partner at Novo Holdings, and Rob Beudeker, Investment Director at DSM Venturing, will join Deep Branch s Board of Directors. Lars Topholm, Head of Research at Carnegie Investment Bank in Denmark and non-executive Board member of Deep Branch since 2019, has been elected Chair of the Board. ....

Through the deal, Sunfire will provide a megawatt-scale high-temperature HyLink 200 solid-oxide electrolyser system, which will split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, as part of the E-CO2MET R&D project, being run at the Total Raffinerie Mitteldeutschland. “Total is delighted to develop efficient technologies to re-use CO 2 to chemicals, materials and fuels,” said Total chief technology officer Marie-Noelle Semeria, adding that Total sees the co-operation as “heralding a new era” for the industrial use of renewable hydrogen and methanol in refineries. “Carbon capture, utilisation and storage is going to play an essential role in achieving carbon neutrality without curbing economic and social growth,” she said. ....
