Brendan O'Hara urges Electoral Commission to respond to pro-Union ad concerns

SNP MP for Argyll and Bute, Brendan O Hara, has written to the electoral regulator about concerns
AN SNP MP has written to the Electoral Commission over concerns that groups spending thousands on pro-Union ads flouted online advert rules in the run-up to last week s election.
It was revealed earlier this week that in the days before the Scottish Parliament election third-party campaigns - with no clear details of where their funding comes from - spent tens of thousands of pounds on digital ads pushing Scots to vote tactically.
Brendan O Hara called on the Electoral Commission, the independent election regulator, for a comprehensive response , saying that the ads “may be contrary to election law and regulations”. ....

Did Unionist tactical voting ads stop SNP from winning key target seats?

But an OpenDemocracy report found the party could have lost key seats, which prevented them from achieving an outright majority, due to  social media adverts with a lack of transparency over funding.
The site found a group called Young Unionists spent more than £20,000 on Facebook ads, including more than £5000 in the final days of the campaign. Tens of thousands of voters were pushed to the VoteUnion tactical voting tool. ....

Thursday’s Scottish elections were not short of news stories. A record number of Scots voted. The Scottish National Party fell one seat short of a majority – in part as a result of tactical voting for Unionist parties in seats such as Dumbarton.
It’s hardly surprising that unionists voted tactically. The split among three Unionist parties – Tories, Labour and Lib Dems – has long been a boon to nationalists.
But over the weekend, I found myself wondering whether – and how – Unionist tactical voting had been coordinated. So I decided to do some digging.
And what I found is pretty concerning – to put it mildly. ....
