Schuylkill County commissioners adopt budget without tax hike

POTTSVILLE — Schuylkill County property owners will not pay higher county taxes in 2021, as the commissioners on Wednesday adopted next year’s budget of more than $66 million. The spending package keeps the real estate tax at 15.98 mills and the per capita tax at $5, as the commissioners acknowledged the hard times many people face. “This has been a very difficult year,” commissioners Chairman Barron L. Hetherington said. “There’s no big pile of money anywhere.” Commissioner Gary J. Hess also said this was not the time to approve adding to property owners’ financial burdens. “No tax increase is the best thing in the world,” he said. “People really couldn’t afford it.”
