Tuesday marked the final day of filing for several area school boards, including Jefferson City. The April 4, 2023, election will host a spate of familiar faces, along with several new ones.
The Capital City offense went quiet late. The Lady Cavaliers came back from a third-quarter deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, but were unable to hold on as the Eldon Lady Mustangs beat Capital City 53-50 at Capital City High School on Tuesday.
Down the stretch, the Blair Oaks Lady Falcons did the little things to get huge victory. “That was a big one,” Blair Oaks coach Brandon Moore said Tuesday night after the Lady Falcons defeated the Fatima Lady Comets 41-35. “We look forward to this game every year, it’s always fun to compete against them. We know how good of a basketball team Fatima is. It will help us down the road, for sure.”
The Helias Lady Crusaders knocked off a perennial power Saturday afternoon. Mikah Edwards was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with :01.7 remaining in overtime. The Helias senior made all three free throws to rally the Lady Crusaders to a 63-62 win against Bishop Miege (Kan.) in the Twelve Courts of Christmas at Hy-Vee Arena.
It doesn’t look like there will be an easy game for anyone in the Jefferson Bank Holiday Hoops Classic. “You know your first-round game will be a barnburner and there’s a really good chance all three of them will be as well,” Helias coach Garrett Wiggans said Wednesday during a press conference for the Classic, to be played Dec. 28-30 at Capital City High School.
