Coach and club delighted at South Canterbury's double Olympic selection

South Canterbury Athletics Club members Lauren Bruce, left, and Tom Walsh have been selected for the Tokyo Olympics.
The club and the coach who developed the athletic talents of Tom Walsh and Lauren Bruce are thrilled with their selection in the New Zealand team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“I’m quite delighted,” coach Ian Baird said.
“I told Tom and Lauren what they could achieve way in the future – and it’s come to pass.”
Bruce and Walsh, both members of the South Canterbury Athletics Club which will celebrate its 150th anniversary later in the year, were named in Athletics NZ’s 15-strong squad for the Olympics on Friday. ....

NZ's oldest athletics club seeking historical items for 150th jubilee

Founded in 1871, the club is the oldest athletics club in New Zealand and among the oldest in the world. The first club ever established was the London Athletic Club in 1863; the oldest cross-country and harriers club, the Thames Hare and Hounds, started in London in 1868.
The South Canterbury club went into recess from 1908 to 1930 but has thrived in recent years with more than 100 members.
