University of Victoria professor Michael Prince has quit the federal government's Disability Advisory Group, saying Ottawa's new disability benefit falls short.
“It was almost like a dagger going through my heart a real letdown,” the B.C. man said. “After finding out that it was only $200, it was very disheartening.”
A 2023 analysis by the Parliamentary Budget Office estimated the benefit might provide an average of approximately $7,700 to $14,600 per year – significantly more than the $2,400 in the new budget
One reason for limited progress on income inequality is that many of the assumptions the current federal government is operating on aren’t that different from previous Conservative and Liberal governments or from the assumptions that a Poilievre federal government would be operating under. Whether it was the Mulroney government, the Chrétien government, the Martin government, the Harper government, or the current Trudeau government, there is a reluctance to recognize the role that governments can play in building a stronger, fairer Canada.
