Opinion | How About a Smaller Inauguration?


To the Editor:
We are fighting two threatening wars: Covid-19 and civil unrest.
As currently planned, our next president’s inauguration will take place surrounded by heavily armed protection 20,000 National Guard troops and assorted barriers, a ceremony conducted inside a virtual fortress. Nevertheless, safety for all is never guaranteed. How will the sky above be protected?
As an alternative, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt did during World War II in 1945, the inauguration could be held at the White House, rather than the Capitol, with fewer people in attendance.
This would increase safety from both extremists and infection, lower anxiety (not to mention costs) and present a picture to the world that we take violence seriously and that protection of our people is our priority. We don’t have to prove anything with displays of grandeur. ....
