of normal isn t the right word but some semblance of normality. or routine. and obviously as you know the war has moved further east. we saw one of the railroad locations that was hit. we saw that on the way over. there s indications of the fight that is going on. and there are air raid sirens every now and then. there s a very different mood in kyiv right now and a lot of focus on what s going on in the east. it s interesting for you to be there. when i was there and certainly the last time kyiv was such a hot bed for bombing and bombardment from the russians and now you have two of the highest profile americans going over to visit ukraine. blinken and secretary of defense as well, lloyd austin going over. things have changed there. yeah, statements were very strongly supportive obviously of the zelenskyy regime. and the u.s. is sending the heavy weapons that the ukrainian really say they need for this new phase of the war. yeah, be safe. good to see you. see you again
her death, like that of thousands of ukrainians over the last two months, was neither accidental nor incidental to any military objective, it simply was because, russians have been targeting residential areas from the beginning of this invasion. it is, more than anything, this war s defining characteristic, targeting civilians, or, in this case, in irpin targeting civilians simply trying to flee the bombardment. a family here, evacuees at a train station. children in a well-marked bomb shelter in mariupol. countless civilians in the more than 100 hospitals and health facilities hit so far. two months and a day have taught us that about human endurance, in the face of cruelty, also being tested, military bravery. in villages like this one on the eastern front lines, the ukrainian army s success in inflicting losses on russian troops has come at the cost of the village itself. local officials saying, our troops retreated a little because not much, because there was no longer an

legal basis for directing national security agencies to take such an extreme action. as we reported on this broadcast yesterday the new york times lays out the multi-pronged effort by trump and his allies to get just one federal agency to bite and join the crusade to overturn the result by seizing machines. trump reportedly tried to get doj to seize the machines and then rejected by ag bill barr so then a plan for the defense department to do it. only to get pushback from white house counsel and lo and behold his own lawyer rudy giuliani. so then giuliani was asked if he could look into whether dhs could seize the machines. giuliani said, sure. he tried but then he too was rebuffed by secretary ken cuccinelli and now another attempt by trump to get an official to agree to the plan. the new york times reporting this, quote, cuccinelli who told giuliani that the homeland security department didn t have the authority to impound the machines later encountered trump at a meeti
