The owners of Japantown s oldest business are retiring, after generations of making mochi, reports KQED.
Benkyodo owners Ricky and Bobby Okamura have fulfilled a 115-year-old family legacy by shaping 1,000 handmade balls a day since 1990 in the small shop on Buchanan Street, but have decided to call it a day at the end of the year.
The mochi shop was opened in 1906 by Suyeichi Okamura, Ricky and Bobby’s grandfather, on nearby Geary St.. He named his place Benkyodo, meaning affordable, to let the community know their confections wouldn t price them out.  ....

Supporting business, promoting wildfire, school health bills (Opinion)

Dear Friends, I wanted to share with you a few highlights of the 1st Senate District office and upcoming activities.
Brian Dahle
Legislation I authored this year has been moving through committee hearings, including Senate Bill 592, which recently passed the Committee on Natural Resources & Water. This measure will look at the effects of wildfire on our wildlife and forest health. Every year, catastrophic fires burn too many acres in California, destroying lives and property. What we haven’t analyzed and improved upon is the cost to our wildlife and watersheds. SB 592 will now go to the Senate fiscal committee for consideration. ....

Like other Black entrepreneurs in her Inglewood neighborhood, Annie Graham has struggled to keep her business afloat during the pandemic.
At Ms. Ann’s clothing boutique on Manchester Boulevard, the Easter finery Graham stocked last spring remains on the racks. Also untouched are many of the exclusively white outfits for weddings and parties that she sells at her storefront next door, the White House. Customers, she said, mostly buy dresses now for funerals.
Annie Graham, owner of Ms. Ann’s dress shop in Inglewood, had her application last year for a PPP loan rejected.

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is being used again in the U.S. In a statement, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) said, “After a thorough review of very rare adverse events following the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup supports the recommendation of the FDA and CDC to lift the pause on the vaccine.” The statement did add that clinics in the state can administer the vaccine as long as they provide educational materials about the low risk of associated health effects and offer other available vaccines.
