Local street performers were banned from entertaining tourists visiting Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade, Pier and Transit Mall during peak afternoon and evening shopping hours, as part of the city’s Twenty-Seventh Supplement. While the recent safer-at-home orders had affected the number of acts performing in recent months, performers had found ways to continue with a few creative adaptations.
California eased its coronavirus restrictions to allow up to three households to socialize outdoors, an expansion of rules aimed at people tempted to have even larger gatherings around Halloween, Thanksgiving and end-of-year holidays. The goal was not to encourage larger gatherings, Newsom said, but to recognize the increasing pressure for get-togethers and provide ways for people to act appropriately. ....

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Taiwan’s envoy in the United States, Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), was able to share the East Asian country’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic with 20 Californian mayors thanks to the assistance of a Taiwanese-American mayor, reports said Saturday (Dec. 19).
Hsiao held a video conference with members of the California Mayors Coalition on Friday (Dec. 18) to explain how Taiwan had become one of the most successful countries in containing the spread of the virus, CNA reported.
The envoy’s 30-minute talk was organized by Peggy Huang (黃瑞雅), the mayor of Yorba Linda in the state’s Orange County. As the city government’s web page describes, she is a Taiwanese native who spent most of her adolescence and young adult years in Northern Ca ....

Covid Is Everywhere, but Federal Pandemic Relief Cash Flowed Mostly To Big Cities

Across Southern California, cities are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to help people get through the pandemic. Money is going to pay utility bills and rent, feed families, and help businesses keep the doors open. It s also backstopping stressed local government budgets in some places, and paying for coronavirus testing in others.
Relief was supposed to come from California s allocation of federal CARES Act money. But the mayors of 60 cities are complaining that the way the money was divided meant their communities didn t receive a fair share.
They ve signed a protest letter, from the California Mayors Coalition to Governor Newsom, asking for a larger share of the money. ....
