Resolution against cancelling new courses in Arabic colleges Over two weeks after the Calicut University Syndicate passed a resolution against cancelling new courses in affiliated Arabic colleges, the authorities have been accused of not informing the Chancellor’s office about a statute amendment for the purpose. One of the Syndicate members said on Wednesday that students in these colleges were concerned about the delay affecting the future of these courses. The then United Democratic Front (UDF) government had sanctioned two courses each in nine Arabic colleges in 2013-14. As many as 4,000 students are studying these courses. However, the statute amendment for the purpose had been delayed owing to a legal tangle. Later, when the media reported about an official proposal to the Syndicate against the statute amendment that would have led to scrapping of the courses altogether, it kicked up a row. ....
Boys’ hostel sought for tribal research institute Updated: Updated: Share Article AAA A former member of the Calicut University Syndicate has sought a boys’ hostel at the Institute for Tribal Studies and Research (ITSR), affiliated to the university and located at Chethalayam in Wayanad district. In his representation to Vice-Chancellor M.K. Jayaraj, K. Sivaraman, former Syndicate member, said that students from the Scheduled Tribe communities at the ITSR were forced to stay in pitiable conditions now. Boy students were now staying in the academic block of the institution and the adjacent building under the Health Department. Only girls had been given hostel facility. Though land was available for the construction of a boys’ hostel, funds were reportedly not available, Mr. Sivaraman claimed. ....

A decision to this effect was taken by a standing committee on distance education of the university on Tuesday. According to sources, over 30,000 students are yet to get study material. By reducing fees, the university may incur a loss of around ₹2 crore, they said. ....
