[email protected] PATTON The Cambria Heights Middle School has once again been recognized as one of the top schools in the state. Cambria Heights received its third redesignation as a Don Eichhorn: Schools to Watch for its adaptation to COVID-19 and continued progress in the classroom. “We were faced with unprecedented challenges over the last year,” Middle School Principal Jarrod Lewis said. “This was a whole new ball game for us this past year, and we saw a change of education that hadn’t been seen in our lifetime.” Cambria Heights has been recognized as a School to Watch for the past nine years. ....
[email protected] ROARING SPRING More than 50 concerned residents flooded the Friendship Fire Station on Monday to question the Roaring Spring Borough Council’s deliberation over disallowing vehicles on Plum Creek Mountain. But after an hourlong discussion with residents, the council tabled discussions to further investigate the issue. “We had good conversations with good people,” council President Rodney Green said. “I think we all learned a lot tonight.” The capacity meeting stemmed from council members exploring a potential ban of motor vehicles on Plum Creek Mountain, which is owned by the borough. Green said that while the land has been traveled on by locals for generations, issues arose from a group that wanted to hold a large event with ATVs on the property. ....
[email protected] EBENSBURG After an abbreviated ceremony was held last year, the fifth-annual Cambria County Hero Hike returns at Ghost Town Trail next weekend. The hike, which will take place as part of Armed Forces Day ceremonies on May 15, will honor active military personnel. “Armed Forces Day is one of the more overlooked holidays,” said Cambria County Director of Veteran Services Zackary Portser. “Everybody knows about Veterans Day or Memorial Day. Armed Forces Day is celebrating those who are serving currently in uniform, wherever they are at.” COVID-19 limited the event last year, officials said, with no ceremony and the hike spread out over one week. ....
[email protected] Michael Strasser has served as superintendent of the Cambria Heights School District since 2009. He will wrap up his 37-year teaching career at the end of this school year. PATTON Michael Strasser has faced numerous challenges throughout his 37-year teaching career. But of all the obstacles he has faced, arguably none have been more difficult than COVID-19. Entering the final weeks of his career in public education, Strasser reflected on the stressful yet rewarding journey he has witnessed. “To see the teachers, students and parents rise to the challenge when changes were not only occurring weekly, but daily and sometimes hourly, made me proud to be a part of Cambria Heights and this resilient community we call home,” said Strasser, who is set to retire at the end of the school year and current Director of Education Ken Kerchenske will become the district’s new superintendent. ....
While police said they have identified a potential suspect, the person remains at large. “This really took everyone by storm,” Patton Police Officer Bryan Diehl said. “We are aware and actively investigating this situation.” While he did not release a number, Diehl said there were a “series of vehicle thefts” throughout town. The majority of thefts were from unlocked vehicles, Diehl said, though there were an unspecified number of cases that involved the looter prying the doors open with “unknown tools or equipment.” “The majority of break-ins have been from people simply leaving their vehicles unlocked,” Diehl said. Diehl said footage of the suspect was obtained from a resident’s home doorbell camera, though the individual could not be identified due to “poor picture quality.” ....
