Four Winhawk swimmers bound for state (3/17/2021)
It was a good day for the Winhawk swim team at the Section 1A meet last Thursday afternoon. Our guys notched a very impressive 38 of 42 total swims that were personal bests. However, our guys learned that you can’t appreciate the taste of success without the bittersweet taste of struggle.
That sour taste was fed to us early on by an unfortunate disqualification in the 200 medley relay. Colin White, Julius Hanson, Brayden Coudron, and Gavin Nelson all swam personal bests and notched the state cut time, finishing in 1:41. Sadly, it was judged that a relay exchange left a bit early and dreams of attending state in the relay were dashed.
Winhawk boys swim team edges out Albert Lea (3/3/2021)
The Winhawks Boys swim and dive team won their final dual meet of the season in Albert Lea on Thursday night, with a score of 75 to 73. This was the Winhawks second in-person dual meet, and their only away dual meet of the season. Energy was high and the swims were fast.
We began the night with our normally strong 200 medley relays and we finished with a 1 – 2 finish. The A relay team of Gavin Nelson, Briar Volkman, Brayden Coudron, and Charlie Miller won with their 1:49.05. Our B Relay of Kyle Coudron, Adam Martin, Elijah Vieth, and Matthew Bricco took second in 2:05.06.
Winhawk swimmers top Faribault, Owatonna (1/27/2021)
The Winhawk Boys Swim and Dive had a great week of meets, winning against both Faribault on Tuesday, 82-61, and against Owatonna on Thursday, 96-81. The team moves to 2-1 for the season in dual meets. Tuesday’s meet versus Faribault was a virtual meet and Thursday’s with Owatonna meet was in-person.
This was a great week where we saw good practice habits showing up in meets. For the first two weeks, we had been working hard on building endurance since not many athletes have been active since November. Now that the guys have some endurance under their belt, this week the practices and meets have been focused on good habits such as turn work, streamlines, and good stroke length. I’m happy to say that the guys have made great improvements, and their times and placing reflect that.
