Coronavirus mutations in New York, California spark concern
Mutations that have arisen in the US are spreading rapidly. Are they more contagious? And will the vaccines still be effective against them?
Since health authorities have begun sequencing positive COVID-19 cases more carefully i.e., genetically examining test results they have also found more and more mutations.
Most of those mutations are insignificant. But there are a few variants that researchers and officials are concerned about, in part because they are more contagious and because existing vaccines could be less effective at protecting against them.
No more freedom of movement. Some countries are trying to stem the spread of mutations by closing borders. ....

The dominant variant of the coronavirus in California has acquired dangerous mutations
Scientists have recently reported that a new variant from California has become the dominant lineage in that state. In a review of their database, they had first identified it in the early part of last summer, laying dormant until the winter surge propelled it rapidly throughout the state. According to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), this particular variant grew from 0 percent in September to 50 percent in late January.

Viruses mutate all the time, including the coronavirus that s caused the global covid-19 pandemic. Although most of the changes are innocuous, several mutants have sparked alarm, and three variants that emerged in the U.K., South Africa and Brazil have caused particular concern. Studies suggest they are more contagious, and some evidence points to one of them being more deadly, and another driving reinfections. Vaccine developers are working on new versions after early data from South Africa indicated AstraZeneca s inoculation was less effective against the variant circulating there. ....
