Vietnam agriculture ministry puts sluice gate into temporary operation in Mekong Delta

Photo: Chi Quoc / Tuoi Tre The Cai Be sluice gate and its boat lock on the Cai Be River were put into temporary operation on Friday to prevent saline intrusion in Kien Giang Province and other localities in the Mekong Delta region. Construction on the sluice gate has been basically competed after 15 months since its ground-breaking ceremony in November 2019, with only a few works expected to follow suit in 2021. This is considered a super irrigation project’ in the region with an investment of about VND3.3 trillion (US$143,38 million) in the first and about VND2.5 trillion ($108.62 million) in the second phase from government bonds.

Mega irrigation system to help Mekong Delta tackle drought, salinity By Cuu Long   January 13, 2021 | 09:07 am GMT+7 One of the two parts of a mega irrigation system in southern Vietnam s Mekong Delta will start operation next month in Kien Giang Province. Construction of the system worth VND3.3 trillion ($142.17 million) started in November 2019, with two parts on the Cai Lon and Cai Be rivers, both originating in Hau Giang and passing through Kien Giang before meeting the sea. It included building storm shelters for boats and upgrading fishing ports. It is building a storm shelter in Phu Quoc district’s Tho Chu Island and upgrading an existing port in the vicinity. It costs 154.2 billion VND (6.7 million USD), with 32 billion VND spent in 2016-20 and the rest to be invested in the next five years.
