Oak Harbor’s Wyatt Miller wins 185-pound state wrestling title BY YANEEK SMITH, BEACON CONTRIBUTOR MARION It was another successful season for Oak Harbor wrestlers, as Wyatt Miller won the championship at 195 pounds, and the Rockets finished off the year by coming in 11th at the Division III state tournament with 33 points. Legacy Christian Academy edged Edison to claim the title with 128 points. The Chargers finished second with 117.5 points, followed by Delta (73.5), Miami East (65) and Mechanicsburg (51). Oak Harbor nearly won a Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division title, losing by half a point to Edison. The Rockets had claimed a sectional title and were third at district. ....

(Press photo by Lee Welch/www.FamilyPhotoGroup.com) Eastwood, the reigning Northern Buckeye Conference wrestling champions, returns eight letter winners, including three Division III state qualifiers. Gavin Owens (45-7) last year qualified for state at 120 pounds, Brandon Hahn (48-2) at 126 and Jimmy Recknagel (40-11) at 152. All are already off to a good start this year, winning individual titles at the seven-team Lakota Pool Tourney. Last year, Maynard, Xavier Escobedo and Owens were NBC champions and Hahn won a sectional and district championship, plus he excelled at top D-III tournaments hosted by Van Buren and Lima Central Catholic. Owens is a junior this year, Hahn and Recknagel are seniors. ....

Coach George Bergman’s squad has 10 upperclassmen filling the 14 weight classes, and expectations are lofty. Leading the way is senior Wyatt Miller at 195 pounds, who was a district champion last season. Miller, who is currently ranked No. 1 in Division III and has signed on to wrestle at Appalachian State University. Fellow senior Tyler Davis (126) is a two-time state qualifier and Marc Spindler (182) is the other senior starter. ....
