AJ Ranii Scores 2 Goals in Return to Lineup, Sparking San Marcos Past Oxnard in CIF Opener

Housing and Development Newsletter
Before Ranii put the finishing touches on the 12th San Marcos win, the Royals (12-0-1) dodged a couple of bullets from Oxnard’s cat-quick forward Angel Ivan Olguin. Twice Olguin slammed shots of the crossbar. The first one came in the fourth minute and the second 25th.
“He was a handful,” McLean said. “They were an impressive team in the sense that when we had a player pinch in (to defend), they always knew to play into the space that that player left. They were well organized.”
San Marcos broke the scoreless game in the 28th minute on a nifty play in the box. Yahir Vasquez cleverly back-heeled a through pass that Cade McLean finished. ....

Cade McLean Deliver Game Winner for San Marcos in First-Place Showdown With Santa Barbara

Housing and Development Newsletter
McLean’s goal came seven minutes after Santa Barbara nearly took the lead on a brilliantly taken free kick by Seba Alvarez from 20 yards straight out. Alvarez’s blast cleared the wall, clanged the underside of the cross bar, bounced off the ground, hit the bar again and dropped into the arms of San Marcos goalie Sam Friedman.
In a video from a cellphone, it appeared the ball cleared the goal line. But it was such a bang-bang play that the assistant referee couldn’t make a call.
“It’s unlucky,” said Alcaraz. “That’s part of the game. We’re gonna get calls and we’re not going to get calls sometimes. You can’t complain, you just got to move on.” ....
