I couldn t ignore it but i ignored the idea i was having any kind of pain. simply not thinking about the pain is what janice said enabled him to keep playing, to overcome his pain. i learned then about the power of the mind, and i said, no, i m going to keep playing. but continuing had consequences. and this thumb was operated on and shortened and i had five more operations on my hands. janice hid his condition, but eventually it became too much to bear. at a white house event in 1984, janice finally revealed everything. the disease is still with me, i have it, but it does not have me. the moment was at first cathartic, but then janice became depressed. for a year he refused to play. janice s wife, whose father is the actor gary cooper, asked him to compose a piece for a ....
