Summer reading program at Burlington library keeps students sharp during vacation

BURLINGTON — At a time when many school kids are letting their brains take a rest, hundreds of Burlington students are spending this summer keeping themselves mentally active by reading. The Burlington Public Library has reported surprisingly high enrollment of 450 kids in a reading program designed to help students avoid the hazards of summer brain drain. Organizers said they thought fewer families might sign up this year, because the COVID-19 pandemic prevented in-person recruitment of readers and also because the public health crisis made it impossible to hold a large kickoff event for the program.

Educators work to understand — and explain — the debate about critical race theory

RACINE — Burlington Area School District parents spent a majority of their public comments at a recent school board meeting condemning critical race theory. One parent, Misty Gilbert, joined others in urging school board members to keep critical race theory — an approach to teaching kids the history of racism — out of the classrooms in Burlington. School board candidates disclose taking money from partisan groups

School board candidates in two Racine County school districts have received hundreds of dollars in donations from political parties in nonpartisan elections. New campaign finance reports show that candidates in the Burlington Area School District and the Muskego-Norway School District — which straddles Racine and Waukesha counties — received a combined $3,500 from Republican organizations. The Waukesha County Democratic Party had announced its support for three Muskego-Norway candidates — in response to Republican support for others — but the campaign disclosures show no Democratic dollars flowing into the race. The partisan support in April 6 school board elections included donations from Rebecca PAC, a political-action committee created by former Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch, a potential Republican candidate for governor in 2022.
