Cypress Bayou Casino employee Terry Freeman received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine while at work.
Rachel Patin did not want to get any of the three available COVID-19 vaccines. They were all produced too quickly for her comfort.
“[There’s] just not enough history, enough testing,” the Iberia Parish home health aide said.
But on April 7, she reluctantly found herself at a vaccination clinic at the Cypress Bayou Casino Hotel in neighboring St. Mary Parish.
There were a few things that helped to change her mind. First, the shot that was being administered that day was Johnson & Johnson’s one-dose vaccine. She said she wouldn’t have taken one of the two-shot options. Second, she and her husband really miss traveling. ....

Program aims to boost Louisiana children's reading readiness

Starting next month, 50 families in public housing in Baton Rouge with preschool-age children are receiving tablet computers, books and educational toys, followed by regular virtual and in-person home visits from education coaches who will help to get their children ready for kindergarten.
It s a modest start to a program that its backers hope will eventually go statewide. It s meant to narrow both the achievement gap and digital divide between low-income students and their more affluent peers.
As a former elementary school principal, I ve seen firsthand how far too many of our children start school behind, said Chloe Wiley, initiatives manager with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation and the founder of a charter school in Baton Rouge. ....
