Time flies when you're bumblin': Bumble bees focus of survey in Roaring Fork Valley

When a bumble bee emerges from torpor, it repeatedly rubs its arms over its head and flexes its abdomen. It’s a half-stretch, half-dance move that warms the bee up and out of the state of decreased physiological activity. 
A few dozen bees found themselves doing that dance Wednesday morning after wildlife technicians from the district conducted a bumble bee survey on forest land between Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.  ....

Two days after Christmas in 1831, a soft-featured gentleman set sail from Plymouth, England, aboard a modest brig-sloop. The ship was embarking on a two-year voyage of exploration, and the 22-year-old former divinity student had been invited to serve as the expedition’s naturalist. Though he had taken only a few courses in what was then called natural philosophy, he’d been recommended for the post by a prominent botanist. Better yet, his wealthy father was able to pay his way on the voyage, which meant the expedition could forgo a salary. Over the last two decades, these yellow-and-black furred insects have experienced a 90% drop in abundance across the West. That’s according to research by Jonathan Koch , an entomologist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Logan, Utah. His data adds to a growing body of research with the same alarming findings.
Western bumble bees perform critical pollination services for wild plants and cultivated fruits and vegetables. They are known as “buzz” pollinators – attaching to a plant’s pollen structure and vibrating their wings to release it. Many plants, including tomatoes and peppers, require this technique to spread their pollen. ....
