Doctors on strike
Government contract doctors will go on a one-day strike today amid intimidation by those in charge at public hospitals.
Putrajaya made some last-minute concessions by promising up to four years of contract extension but the doctors see it as a ploy to stop the strike. They want permanent placements, not more contract extensions.
Under the current system, contract doctors face joblessness after the end of their five-year training because the government does not have the budgetary means to offer them permanent positions.
Cognisant of the Covid-19 pandemic, protest organisers have asked participants to ensure that permanent doctors will cover their shift during the strike while those in critical services are to return to their posts if needed. ....

Australian miner Lynas Rare Earths Limited must construct a Permanent Disposal Facility (PDF) following Putrajaya s decision last year to renew its licence for three years along with a slew of conditions.
Among them, the PDF must be built within a year. But Lynas plan to do so in Bukit Ketam - a forest reserve about 35km from Kuantan, Pahang - hit a snag following the Department of Environment s (DOE) rejection in April.
Although Lynas appeared to indicate that the Bukit Ketam plan was still on - it claimed that DOE needed further information on the proposal - documents sighted by ....

Malaysia: Lynas' plan for permanent radioactive waste dump rejected

Green Left this was probably just company spin.
“For now, we have managed to stop Lynas from dumping its toxic radioactive waste in Kuantan’s water catchment. However, for as long as the radioactive waste remains in Malaysia, we cannot let our guard down,” she said.
“The DOE website clearly states that Lynas EIA for the permanent waste dump proposal for Bukit Ketam has been rejected and now Lynas is spinning a new story, I guess to prevent its stock value from crashing.
“Under Lynas’ licence condition from 2018, the government should stop its operation to stop more toxic radioactive waste from being piled up further. However, it might be wishful thinking albeit a public and environmental health blessing if the government actually enforces the law on Lynas.” ....

RM50k fines for burger, rojak sellers
Small traders in Kelantan slapped with RM50,000 fines for operating beyond allowed hours under the movement control order (MCO) have sparked their outrage.
A rojak seller said he couldn’t afford to pay even at a discount and would have to choose prison. A burger seller said he was shocked.
Netizens contrasted their predicament to celebrity Neelofa’s family, whose SOP violations compound came to RM60,000 for more than 20 people and saw it as an example of oppression. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 Bentong MP Wong Tack pressed Khairy Jamaluddin today to withdraw Lynas Corp’s operating permit as the latter said he would if the rare-earths firm did not start building a permanent waste facility by the previous quarter.
The lawmaker reminded the science, technology and innovation minister of remarks the latter gave in the Dewan Rakyat that Lynas must begin construction of its Permanent Disposal Facility (PDF) by March 2021, adding that its failure to do so would result in its licence being revoked. ....
