Ex-Mara Inc chief pleads not guilty

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Mara Incorporated Sdn Bhd (Mara Inc) chairman Datuk Mohammad Lan Allani has claimed trial at two Sessions Court here to 22 counts of corruption and money laundering amounting to RM20.45mil involving the purchase of a property in Australia.
He pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which were read out separately before judges Azura Alwi and Rozina Ayob here yesterday.
The 65-year-old is facing 17 charges of receiving RM17.45mil from Optimus Capital Sdn Bhd director Mazrul Haizad Marof as an inducement for him to approve a proposal paper titled “Proposed Acquisition of a Student Accommodation Building and a Commercial Retail Block known as Dudley International House, 7-14 Dudley Street, Caulfield East, Victoria 3145, Melbourne, Australia”. ....

Kuala Lumpur: Four men were charged in the Magistrate’s Court here Wednesday with the murder of a former Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) Director of Information Technology Dr Wan Hassan Wan Embong in a robbery at his residence two weeks ago.
Security guard S. Vickeswaran, 22, despatch rider P. Kogilan and unemployed M. Ravindran, both 23, and electrician T. Sugu, 27, nodded after the charge was read out to them before Magistrate Wong Chai Sia (she), but no plea was recorded as the case comes under the High Court’s jurisdiction. ....

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman, whose son is among the four men accused of killing former Mardi researcher Dr Wan Hassan Wan Embong, cried hysterically after he was charged.
The mother of 27-year-old electrician T. Sugu sobbed and wailed outside the courtroom, saying that her son was a good person and could not have committed such an offence.
“He is the only son who takes good care of me, ” she said in Tamil.
Sugu, together with security guard S. Vickneswaran, 22, despatch rider P. Kogilan, 23, and unemployed M. Ravindran, 23, were jointly charged in the Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of 73-year-old Wan Hassan.They allegedly committed the offence at the victim’s house in Bukit Bandaraya here between 3.35am and 4am on Nov 29. ....
