This emergency. with me now is ohio congressman tim ryan. he is also the state s democratic nominee for senate. congressman ryan, thanks for being with us this morning. thanks for having me. so senator joe manchin over in the senate did torpedo this climate initiative, which would have paired climate investments with tax increases on the wealthy. do you agree with that decision to hilt the brakes? no. i think we need to be going all in on some of these initiatives, not just for the obvious reasons of dealing with climate and making sure that we have a planet that we can steward to the next generation in a healthy way, but also so that we can outcompete china in these industries of the future like building electric vehicles, building electric trucks. we ve got a burgeoning and significant solar industry in places like toledo, ohio. we need to dominate those industries of the future. but i think as we talk about what the president is doing, i ....
This year to improve more than 3,000 airports across 50 states. this year, this year we announced $5 billion so union workers can get to work building electric vehicles and charging stations. we announced the largest investment in public transit in american history, more than the entire amtrak system when it started. $20.5 billion. the people we come from, like when president obama would always give me the good assignments. i walked in and he said, joe, fix detroit. i said okay, no problem. you think i m kidding. what i didn t realize is i didn t know a lot about the cities. when i was in detroit, the vast majority of the people living in the city, their jobs were out of town because they re not doing manufacturing in towns anymore. out of town. we got a rail system, a freight ....
Union labor in the united states. what is the environment care about whether its union workers build electric cars. i think this is one way of keeping some of these plans in the country open and moving forward. i was at gm last week with the actually earlier this week with the president. we were out there and they were creating new jobs, building electric vehicles. the president drove in a hummer, he was talking about keeping those jobs here in the united states of america. that s one of the reasons. and quite honestly, members of congress that insist upon this, they want to see this tax credit in there. but just to be clear, tesla, i think, produces their cars in the united states with not union workers. so why should you get a tax credit for a chevy volt, but not a tesla? again, some of the congressional delegation, different parts of the country were pushing for this, something important for them, important for their districts, want to make sure they keep their manufacturing ....
yeah. i think the early states. you know, what s happened with the dnc rules, alex, with you know, 135,000 low-dollar donations and all of this, to try to thin the field out which i understand i don t think it was necessarily intentional. but they re trying to thin the field out, and it s broken up the natural rhythm of a campaign. and bill clinton when he ran in 1992 got in in october, and it s just october. so think about that. the winner who went on to be president just got in, like now. and so, we shouldn t be limiting the field just yet. i think i ve got a hell of a case to make. i ve been in congress 17 years. i ve been on the defense committee, you know? we ve done a lot to rejuvenate the city of youngstown and akron with economic development, new ideas, and i ve got really interesting reform proposals around trauma-informed care, social and emotional learning in the schools. i talk about regenerative agriculture. i talk about healing veterans with yoga and medication, and ....
Class, i believe i m the guy who can best hold his feet to the fire in michigan, in wisconsin, in ohio, in western p.a. go to mitim ryan for america.co and help me out and take him ou if you want president, would you rescind all of the tariffs he s imposed? i would sit down and have a negotiation. who knows where we ll be 18 or 16 months from now, whenever it is, by the time i get in office. i want a firm position with china. we have to out-compete them. they re beating us with building electric vehicles, they re dominating the solar market, they re dominates 5g. i want to fill these old plans with electric vehicles. that s how you beat china. i want us to build the batteries. those jobs are $30 an hour jobs, not $15 an hour jobs. ....
