Marketing program ranked second in the state

The university’s marketing program was recently ranked second in the state by Plexuss, an education technology company based in California. Plexuss connects millions of students globally with opportunities and research in higher education, according to their mission statement. In determining which universities in the state have the best marketing programs, Plexuss used data from the Department of Education to look at key factors such as graduation rates, admissions yield, program popularity and student retention rates.  Associate Professor of marketing Tarà Lopez, who is responsible for many of the advances in the department during the past few years along with Assistant Professor of marketing April Kemp, shared what makes the marketing program at Southeastern different from others across the state.

CMS summer programs return for 2021

Southeastern’s Community Music School summer programs will be returning in June with two popular courses.  Following a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty at the Community Music School is preparing their summer program for students interested in music.  “Summer is a great time for students who are wanting to take music lessons but don’t know if they will like it or if they will have the time,” CMS Director Jivka Duke said.  The summer program will mainly feature the Chamber Music Workshop and the Middle School Band Camp for local students. The Chamber Music Workshop allows students to work on their sight-reading skills and techniques on stringed instruments.

Southeastern Channel, two students win Emmy Awards

Two Southeastern students won the 2020 Student Production Awards from the Emmys’ Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.  Spring 2020 graduate John Sartori and Spring 2021 graduating senior John Williams received recognition for their work at the Southeastern Channel. The channel also received an award in the “Sports-Live Event” category for its student broadcast of Southeastern’s football game against Incarnate Word on Oct. 12, 2019.  Sartori won in the “Talent” category for his demo reel submission, a composite of his on-camera anchoring and reporting work at the Southeastern Channel, for the second year in a row. Sartori said after receiving his first Emmy in his junior year, he worked to improve in his craft.

Bill Evans Jazz Festival returns for 20th anniversary

The 20th anniversary of the Bill Evans Jazz Festival will commence on Wednesday, April 14 through Saturday, April 17, to showcase university student and faculty jazz performances in addition to a guest artist and other school groups from around the region. After last year’s festival was canceled, Director of Jazz and Percussion Studies Michael Brothers set out to plan this year’s celebration and was able to get the event approved by the university with several new restrictions in place. Brothers said the event usually allows for up to 25 groups from schools around the region to register for performances as a part of the university’s partnership with the Louisiana Association for Jazz Education. Less than 15 groups are participating this year, but Brothers said the schools, as well as Southeastern, are grateful for the opportunity.
