Homicide suspect arrested | News, Sports, Jobs

A Bedford man accused of killing a man in Snake Spring Township on April 24 was taken into custody Friday, Pennsylvania State Police reported.
Tico Franklin, 38, was arrested in Baltimore, Md., about 2 p.m., a news release stated. Maryland State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force assisted state troopers in locating and detaining Franklin, the news release stated.
After investigating the death of 62-year-old Bryan Hunter, police accused Franklin of shooting and killing the man.
Franklin allegedly stole a vehicle and fled the scene, heading toward Maryland.
State police recovered the stolen vehicle along I-70 in Maryland. ....

It’s almost time to fling some fish: The Flora-Bama’s annual Interstate Mullet Toss opens Friday and runs through Sunday.
As the accompanying images illustrate, the central activity is a competition in which children, adults and local beach celebrities go for distance records as they fling small fish from Florida into Alabama. Between participants, spectators and collateral activity such as live music, the even tends to draw tens of thousands of people over the course of a weekend.
Last year’s event was among many threatened with cancellation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers were able to keep the annual tradition alive with a smaller fall event planned on short notice, but this weekend should bring a return to form. ....

Fledgling community gardens have been stalled by Greater Dandenong Council after a “challenging” VCAT ruling and doubts on the future of Chandler Road Reserve.
Maralinga Community Garden (MCG) had been set to move into its digs at the reserve after securing $20,000 in council grants as a pilot project in Greater Dandenong.
MCG organiser Bryan Hunter said the council appeared to be “back-tracking” after the group had “jumped through all the hoops” for the past two years.
It had got incorporated, public liability insurance and submitting budgets and management plans as requested.
The community desire to garden intensified during Covid lockdown. But frustratingly, the project has “nothing to show for it”. ....

Winter Haven development clears first hurdle despite school, traffic concerns

WINTER HAVEN The Winter Haven City Commission gave initial approval Monday for a controversial development near County Road 653.
The commission approved a request from H.R. Baxter & Sons Enterprises Inc. to rezone four parcels covering approximately 190 acres from single-family residential to planned unit development.
According to the fact sheet, the property is located east of County Road 653, north of Old Bartow Lake Wales Road and west of McClean Road and consists of former citrus groves, wetlands, and floodplains.
The rezoning reduces the density of the land in question from 824 allowed units to 553 units. Baxter & Sons said the reduction was needed to meet market demand for larger houses on smaller parcels on land. ....

Established in May 2020 with the mandate to help the Cayman Islands proactively prepare for, resiliently cope with and sustainably recover from natural or manmade disasters and emergencies, R3 has distributed over CI$1.3 million to 21 local non-profit or non-profit exempt organisations in its first seven months of operation.
R3 Chairman Bryan Hunter says the Foundation’s primary areas of focus in 2020 were disaster readiness, and relief and recovery from the economic and public health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
