Online news outlet that occasionally will stop you in your tracks. Today gawker stopped me in my tracks when they ran a short feature story, mostly pictures, but a feature story on a statue. A really, really, really big statue in nashville, tennessee. Now, i have been to nashville. Ive been to nashville more than a few times. I can never remember seeing this statue, though, or maybe if i did my brain went into save yourself mode and erased it from my memory. This is a terrifying thing. Its 25 feet tall, its a bunch of different colors. Look at the eyes. Are terrifying blue marble eyes. And look at the teeth. This thing has a mouth like a circular saw. Look at those chompers. Terrifying, right . It looks a little bit like i know what youre thinking scary lucy, that bronze statue that was supposed to be lucille ball in her hometown and then the locals asked the nice artist who made it to please take it down because it was scaring the children. In prison, the term hard time can mean many different things. It can be an inmate who will never see freedom again. Or an inmate whos doing solitary confinement for years at a time. Our crews have seen numerous examples of what its like to do hard time. But theres one story in particular that seems like it came straight out of a movie. Every weekday morning just after sunrise, a group of inmates at the elaine Hunt Correctional Center in louisiana prepares for a grueling day of farming the fields adjacent to the prison. 63 acres of vegetable gardens that we grow vegetables on. Anything from squash, tomatoes, mustard greens, collard greens. Supervised by armed officers on horse back, and earning 2 cents an hour for their labor, the inmates harvest more than a Million Pounds of crops a year. All of it used at the prison. But this particular work detail forces staff to ....

I didnt have the technical difficulties with that. I have seen child molesters get stabbed. I hit the inmate. Tried to get him by his arm. I slipped. I didnt realize when i slipped. It was all blood. A world that lockup producers and camera crews explore on a regular basis. When we walk into prison with our camera crews, inevitably we attract attention. But sometimes its not the kind of attention you want to attract. [ bleep ] yall. We dont need yall around here no more. Shooting in prison is very controlled for the most part until all hell breaks loose. A world where even the most heinous violations are common place. Squeeze a water bottle and shot urine into my eye and mouth area. Been advised by house staff that he has prepared feesous and urine for us.
