NEW BRUNSWICK – Authorities are investigating the cause of a two-alarm fire Tuesday night that damaged an abandoned warehouse on Jersey Avenue.
As of early Wednesday, it had not been determined if the building will be demolished.
Fire Chief Chris Boyler said firefighters received a report about smoke in the area of 298 Jersey Ave. around 9:11 p.m. Tuesday. A city spokesman said the smoke was visible from Joyce Kilmer Avenue.
Arriving firefighters found the 50-by-200-foot warehouse on fire. Boyler said initially it was difficult to determine if the entire building was on fire because it was boarded up and firefighters could not enter.

Averill Park Central School District voters turned down two propositions totaling $45 million, according to the district.
The $32.7 million proposition was defeated 816 to 676 on Tuesday. The second proposition for $12.8 million was rejected, 928 to 564.
The Board of Education and administration will determine the next steps. More information will be communicated as it becomes available, the district said in a statement.
The first proposition was to improve security at the district’s schools while creating a guidance suite at the Poestenkill Elementary School and renovating and expanding the cafeteria at Miller Hill-Sand Lake Elementary School. The second proposition was to create a college and career readiness center and make classroom improvements and upgrades to the high school athletic facilities.
