I opened the door of my home at the dawn of a day that dug a hole in my soul – my mother’s funeral – and Jim was there. I don’t remember what he said on that crisp September morning in Bayonne, N.J., when I was 26 – or even if he said anything. But 42 years later, I still feel his hug.
I sat down at the kitchen table in Jim’s New York City loft a few years later when my soul had gone astray, when I was hanging out way more than writing or doing much of anything else.
